Description

This dissertation is a study of place and community, and in particular (local) sayings about places, characterised by eleven distinguishing material and non-material features. The focus is on English counties, towns and villages. Its chapters consider in turn, place characterised in general terms, place characterised by moral attributes of inhabitants, non-moral attributes of inhabitants, its stage of development, historical events, material attributes, physical description, specific group of inhabitants, traditional events, general way of life and ambiguous saying. Two appendices include a list of place nicknames and a geographical index. Submitted for the Postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies.
