Studies in the Linguistic Geography of Lancashire

Description

M.A. thesis on the dialects of Lancashire. This is a revised and expanded version of the collector's 1955 B.A. thesis, 'Studies in the Phonology of the Living Dialects of Lancashire' ( LAVC/SRP/2/218). The M.A. thesis comprises two parts. Part One contains chapters on the development of Middle English sounds (vowels of accented and unaccented syllables) in the living dialects of Lancashire, consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1956, syntax and morphology and lexical criteria. The appendices provide a list of informants, comments on Incidental Material recorded in Yealand in 1955 by Stanley Ellis (for the complete SED response book, see LAVC/SED/2/2/5), a transcription of A. J. Ellis's notes on dialectal areas in south-east Lancashire, a phonetic transcription of a gramophone disc recording made by Stanley Ellis in Harwood in 1954 and an index of words quoted in Part One. Part Two contains word maps to illustrate the features discussed in chapters I-IV.
