M.A. thesis presenting a general survey of the oral form of Ibibio folktales ( Nigeria), and a study of sample prose and verse tales known by the collector and seen in the context of a single night's storytelling. Its chapters provide an introduction to the region of Ibibioland, a description of categories of Ibibio folktale, the organisation and setting for a night of storytelling, English translations of twenty-one tales, a section on verbal art (in particular, proverbs and the dramatisation of the narrative, the inclusion of song, traditional poetry), the tales and the Aarne-Thompson Type Index. A glossary of Efik-Ibibio words is included.
