Description

M.A. thesis on the dialects of Staffordshire, based on fieldwork in Warslow, Mow Cop, Alton, Barlaston, Mavesyn Ridware, Ellenhall, Lapley, Hoar Cross, Edingale, Wigginton and Himley during the period 1953-1955. A pilot survey of the dialect of Wilnecote was also carried out. Five chapters cover the Staffordshire source material, the sounds of the dialects of the county recorded in 1953-1955, phonological criteria, lexical criteria and miscellaneous criteria. Word lists and word maps are included, and an appendix provides transcriptions of the full texts of nine gramophone records accompanying the thesis.
