Description

M.A. study with sections on historical origins, the changing concept of joinery, innovation, definitions of the terms carpenter and joiner, changes in practices, tools and tool traditions, materials, working conditions and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, women in the joinery craft. Appendices provide information on (personal) naming traditions within the craft, a list of wage rates for the period 1919-1979 and informants used in the thesis.
