Description

M.A. study of customs connected with the life cycle in central Sudan. The aim has been to put these in their proper social setting and to give them possible interpretations, whilst also attempting to connect them with similar customs and practices in Africa and Arabia. Some customs have been traced back to their origin, and their development through time considered. The bulk of the data upon which the thesis is based is drawn from what has been collected by the author from informants. The author has also drawn on previously published material, poetry, proverbs and literary texts. The thesis comprises transcripts of fieldwork interviews (with original Arabic texts presented in an appendix), followed by chapters on pregnancy and childbirth, initiation (circumcision, tribal marks), marriage, death and funerals.
