A New Look at an Old Manuscript and its Author

Description

Research project involving work on a manuscript of miscellaneous folklore items, collected by Wilhelmine Fowler and originally sent to the Folk Lore Society in February 1894 for possible publication in its journal, 'Folk Lore'. Brenda Neale outlines the custodial history of the manuscript, gives biographical information on the collector, and includes in appendices articles relating to Wilhelmine Fowler and correspondence Brenda Neale received relating to her research on the manuscript. This includes letters from the folklorist Iona Opie, the Folklore Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, Hampshire newspapers, Hampshire County Library and Hampshire Record Office. The main section of the thesis comprises a typed transcript of the manuscript, with notes on critical annotations and classification and layout of the manuscript, based on the Uppsala Real Register revised and used by the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies. The thesis was submitted in part fulfilment of the Postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies.
