Elements of an Urban Musical Tradition and its Setting

Description

Dissertation for the Postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies, which details some elements of a musical tradition in north-west Oxford. Such elements include what songs are sung, the attitude of the singer to them, what tunes are played and in what social context they are performed. The study is based on fieldwork carried out in the winter of 1968-1969 in a community living in an area of Oxford known as Jericho. Collecting generally took place in public houses. The study also draws on material collected in 1966 and 1967 by the same collector. The dissertation contains chapters on the definition of traditional music, a description of the setting, Irish musicians in the area, a local pub pianist, the singers Eddie Gorman and Jim Willding, and conclusions on the study undertaken. Appendices contain tune transcriptions, a song book and a Song Title Index.
