Ph.D. divided into five parts, twelve chapters. Following the Introduction, which gives an overview of folksong scholarship and tradition, the thesis contains chapters on the village of Ugthorpe where fieldwork was carried out, including a description of the village (based on oral history) and its annual Quoits Supper. Further chapters document the lives and repertoires of individual singers. The informants are Bill Hart, Thomas Simpson, Bede Hodgson, Jim Wilkinson and George Ellerby. The thesis also includes a list of the fieldwork tape recordings made, including the locations of the songs recorded, a list of the songs recorded, copies of songs sung by Jim Wilkinson, correspondence, a timetable for the Danby and District Quoits League , examples of George Ellerby's pronunciation and a glossary.
