Tradition and Revival: A Comparison of Two Singers

Description

M.A. dissertation which explores some of the facets of the folk song revival in Leeds in 1980, with particular reference to two men who sing in the city's folk clubs. The study looks at how and why people who sing in such clubs learn their songs, what personal gratification they derive from singing them, and the context in which the songs are learned and performed. Fieldwork interviews were carried out in the homes of the two informants, and with members of the audience at clubs where the two were singing (including the Grove Folk Club and Leeds University Folk Club). The study's two main chapters focus on the two singers (one described by the collector as a Traditional singer, the other a Revival singer), and include biographical details, texts of the songs they sing, with contextual notes provided by the collector. A further four leaves are included at the back of the study, detailing the songs sung by the Traditional singer.
