Studies in the Linguistic Geography of Somerset

Description

M.A. thesis on the dialects of Somerset, based on written recordings made in fourteen localities during 1955-1956 using the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, and tape recordings made in July and December 1956 by Stanley Ellis. The thesis gives an account of previous works on the Somerset dialects, the collector's own survey (with a description of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire in use), a description of the Somerset recordings and the localities and informants selected, the sounds of the dialects recorded in 1956, the development of Middle English sounds (vowels of stressed and unaccented syllables, consonantal changes, with word maps to show distribution) and orthographic transcriptions of Stanley Ellis's field recordings, presented with the thesis on thirteen gramophone discs.
