The Living Dialect of Stokesay, Shropshire

Description

M.Phil. study of the dialect spoken in the parish of Stokesay, based on interviews with four informants living in the hamlets of Newton , Aldon and one unnamed location. The study's chapters provide a brief introduction to the area and the informants, a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[67], the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1968, and a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the living dialect. A Word List is included.
