St. Valentine's Day in Britain: The History of a Periodic Custom

Description

M.A. study based on literary and folkloristic data gathered between November 1977 and March 1978. A Historical Introduction is followed by chapters on origins, La Cour d'Amour and the literary tradition, the bird motif, the drawing of lots, the first person met, private divination, presents, the written Valentine, Valentining, evidence gathered in Leeds in 1978, a summary and conclusion. The first of two appendices briefly surveys St. Valentine's Day traditions abroad, whilst the second contains photocopies of Valentine cards available in 1978. A number of subject marker cards are inserted throughout the study. These were probably written by Tony Green, lecturer in the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies.
