A Phonological Study of the Dialects of Hebden Bridge, Lumbutts and Todmorden in Upper Calderdale

Description

M.A. (Dialectology) dissertation presenting the findings of an investigation of the dialects of Hebden Bridge, Lumbutts and Todmorden in Upper Calderdale. These findings are based on data collected through interviews with three informants, each of which was tape recorded (tapes not submitted with the dissertation). The study presents a brief history of the area under consideration, a description of the sound system of Upper Calderdale, the distribution of the vowel phonemes in the three localities, and the speech of the area taken in the broader context of the findings of the Survey of English Dialects for seven nearby localities, and other studies made by dialectology students at the University of Leeds.
