Two West Kent Dialects: A Comparative Phonological Study of the Dialects of Hever and Chiddingstone, Kent

Description

M.A. (Dialectology) dissertation comprising five chapters. The first presents a description of the vowel sounds of stressed and unstressed syllables, and the consonant system, in the Kent dialects of Hever and Chiddingstone. The second chapter offers a comparison of the vowel sounds of the dialects of the two localities, whilst the third gives comparative notes on aspects of their consonant systems. Chapter four discusses the phonological differences between the dialects, and chapter five offers some conclusions. An appendix contains orthographic transcriptions of interviews with the collector's two principal informants, tape-recorded in December 1978.
