Study submitted for the postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies, with chapters on the definition of marriage in the tradition of Islam, marriage among Jahilia (the Arab before Islam), woman before and after Islam, the obligations and rights of the husband in Muslim law, marriage in Islam (including prohibition to marry, essentials in the contract, the mahr (dowry), publicising the marriage), the woman's position as a wife (rights and obligations, including management of the home, the education of children, obedience, respect and divorce), the marriage of slaves, the veil, polygamy and divorce. The final chapter concentrates on marriage customs in the town of Gharian in north-west Libya, with sections on choosing a partner, the betrothal, a day-by-day description of a week of wedding festivities, including singing and dancing, tattooing, food preparation and the slaughtering of animals, meals, food and eating.
