Folk-Song in a Musical Tradition. (A Study of Irish Traditional Singing in Leeds)

Description

M.A. study which examines folk song as part of a living Irish cultural tradition in Leeds, based on fieldwork and research carried out between November 1974 and April 1975. The discussion is based on field recordings of singers and musicians, and a series of interviews with one particular singer, chosen because he was a regular patron of the pub where most of the collector's initial fieldwork was carried out, and seemed typical of the majority of those regularly involved in traditional Irish music and song. The study contains sections on the Leeds Irish and their music, a session, singers and songs, the main informant, songs and performance, the song idea and folk song in a musical tradition. Appendices include song texts and tune transcriptions, a list of informants and suggestions for further study. Photographs show the pub venue, musicians and singers in performance.
