A Collection of Folk Tales from Upper Nidderdale

Description

M.A. dissertation on folktales recorded by the collector in Nidderdale in 1970-1971 (some of the tales are, however, set in locations beyond Nidderdale, e.g. Swaledale, Arkengarthdale and Merryfield). The study is in five parts, the first describing the Upper Nidderdale area, practical aspects of the project and the tales in their background. The collector has transcribed and classified the tales collected, and the remaining four sections include transcriptions of, and notes on, supernatural tales (the Devil, witches and wise women, ghosts, black dogs and boggarts, other unnatural events), tales relating to birth, weddings, death and funerals, occupations and trade (preachers, farmers, buying and selling), jocular anecdotes, local legends.
