"Gypsies and Travellers in Yorkshire"

M.A. study of Gypsy Traveller culture, and their material culture in particular, based on fieldwork carried out on camp sites in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, at the National Gypsy Education Council's conference on social work, education and an ethnic minority, held in Peterborough in January 1980, at 'Gypsy Support Group' meetings in Sheffield, through interviews with council officials involved with the Traveller community and informal interaction situations with Gypsies Travellers communities. Part One presents the collector's fieldwork experiences, and includes character studies of both informants from Gypsy Traveller communities and non-Gypsy Traveller informants, and impressions of the Peterborough conference. Part Two analyses aspects of Gypsy Traveller culture from an anthropological point of view, with sections on the definition and classification of Gypsy Travellers, organisational aspects of the Gypsy Traveller community, educational and linguistic aspects of the culture in relation to current Gypsy Traveller attitudes to the problems involved, technology and material culture, economy and occupations, Gypsy Traveller attitudes to the settled community from a socio-political viewpoint, the settled community's attitudes and laws in relation to the Gypsy Traveller community, the internal jurisdictional mechanisms of the community, repressive legislation and the plight of the Gypsy Travellers in Britain, beliefs and taboos encountered by the collector in the course of fieldwork, origins of European and British Gypsy Traveller and Roma communities and Irish Travellers. The photographs show Gypsy Traveller wagons held at Leeds City Museum, the Ryedale Folk Museum and the Castle Museum, York.
