Description

M.A. thesis comprising three volumes. Volume One contains six chapters, the first being a description of the Essex sounds recorded in 1958, 1959 and 1961. Chapters Two to Six treat the development of Middle English short vowels, long vowels, diphthongs, vowels of unstressed syllables, and consonants, respectively. Volume Two comprises tables of Essex sounds recorded between 1958 and 1961, ordered according to their Middle English sources, and orthographic transcripts of the gramophone disc recordings of speakers which accompany the thesis. Volume Three contains maps illustrating the regional distribution of selected phonological features discussed in Volume One and displayed in the tables of Volume Two.
