A Pronouncing Glossary of the Dialect of Filey in the East Riding of Yorkshire

Description

M.A. thesis based on data collected in Filey (and a small proportion in the nearby village of Muston) during a four year period from June 1959 to August 1963. Tape recordings of speakers were made in April 1962. The study comprises five chapters and two appendices. Volume One contains an introductory chapter which provides a geographical, historical and social background to the area, whilst the second describes the fieldwork methodology employed, the transcription and presentation of the material. Chapter Three analyses the sounds of the dialect and Chapter Four the sound groups of the dialect. Forty-eight diagrams are included within these two chapters. Volume Two presents a pronouncing glossary of phonetic variants, with appendices containing extracts from interviews presented phonetically and orthographically, and biographical details concerning the principal informants.
