Folklore and Traditions of the Railway Industry - With Special Reference to Doncaster

Description

M.A. study on the occupational lore and language of the railway industry. Following an introductory chapter describing the railway town of Doncaster, the second chapter examines the oral traditions of railwaymen, with sections on nicknames for engines and trains, traditional names for sidings, proverbial expressions and jargon, nicknames for lines, poetry by railwaymen, railway songs and anecdotes. The third chapter describes traditions of the footplate, and the fourth considers the railway unions ( National Union of Railwaymen and the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen). The fifth chapter documents customs and traditions connected with the Great Northern Railway, the Midland Railwayand the Great Eastern Railway. Chapter six offers conclusions. Section B of the study contains brief biographies of the informants, details of wages, conditions, rules and regulations of various railway companies, and a synopsis of an 8mm film (not deposited with the study).
