Well Dressing in Derbyshire: The Tideswell Tradition

Description

M.A. dissertation on the custom of welldressing, with particular reference to the Derbyshire village of Tideswell. Its chapters deal in turn with Tideswell and its welldressing team, the welldressing process, welldressing in other villages, the Tideswell tradition and the origins of the custom. The study addresses the question of why the custom is largely confined to the county of Derbyshire, with a description of the geological structure of the area given as a possible reason. Having put forward a number of theories concerning the origins of welldressing, the study suggests that it may be viewed as a form of folk art. The dissertation is illustrated throughout with photographs, postcard prints and pictures from magazines of welldressings under construction and in their finished form. Typed transcripts of tape recorded interviews with people involved in the custom of welldressing are included, although no tapes were submitted with the dissertation.
