A Study of Speech Patterns in the Urban District of Cannock, Staffordshire

Description

Ph.D. thesis containing eight chapters and six appendices on urban speech patterns in Cannock (Staffordshire). The chapters comprise a general introduction, a reconsideration of phonology, the classification of informants by linguistic criteria and according to their background, followed by a comparison of the two, an assessment of the rest of the county of Staffordshire, and conclusions. The appendices contain details of the questionnaire used, background information, letters sent to informants, the ordering of informants, pronunciation charts and a list of pronunciations. Two maps of the area are also included. A file of fieldwork tape transcriptions accompanies the thesis. This was received as a gift to the LAVC from the collector on 2nd March 2005.
