Description

Ph.D. containing in its first volume a treatment of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[53], the modern equivalents of the Middle English vowels and consonants, and an account of the syntax and morphology. Its second volume covers the technical terms of the Fleetwood fishing industry, followed by five appendices containing phonetic transcriptions of the dialect from mechanical recordings, a phonemic analysis of these transcriptions, a list of forty expressions of particular semantic interest, the answers of Fleetwood fishermen to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire and a comparative survey of neighbouring dialects. Two printed articles by the collector are included, on the vocabulary of the Fleetwood punt and the occurrence at Marshside of final parasitic syllabic nasals. The thesis contains photographs of the collector's informants, and his drawings of fishing boats, nets and related items.
