The Linguistic Geography of Shropshire and Worcestershire: A Phonological Survey

Description

M.A. thesis on the dialects of Shropshire and Worcestershire, based on fieldwork using the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire during 1954-1955. Four chapters present an overview of previous work on the dialects of the two counties under investigation, an account of the localities and informants and a description of the fieldwork carried out, the sounds of the dialects recorded in 1954/1955, and the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialects of the two counties. The first appendix presents 88 maps to illustrate phonological points made in the body of the thesis, and a second gives orthographic transcriptions of the texts of the gramophone records made of Shropshire and Worcestershire informants.
