Studies in the Linguistic Geography of Leicestershire and Rutland

Description

M.A. thesis presenting a phonological account of the dialects of Leicestershire and Rutland, and showing by analysis of selected material a significant geographical distribution. The Introduction provides information on the geography and history of the counties, followed by a chapter which discusses source material (previous works on the dialects, and material collected for the study, including sections on fieldwork methodology, descriptions of the localities investigated, biographical details of informants, an account of the methods of investigation using the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire and notes on the audio recordings made). Further chapters cover the sounds used by the informants (with reference to cardinal vowels), an account of the phonological criteria based upon a study of those words asterisked for phonological purposes in the Questionnaire, lexical criteria and conclusions on the linguistic geography of the two counties. Appendices contain word maps illustrating points made in the main body of the thesis, orthographic transcriptions of sound recordings made by Stanley Ellis in May 1956 and the complete text of a Leicestershire dialect poem, Our Obadoyer (author unknown). An alphabetical Word List is also provided. The microfiche is in a separate folder with LAVC/SPR/1/109, a thesis by F. Moody.
