M.A. study of the willow-growing and basket-making industry in Mawdesley, Lancashire. Volume One outlines the history and organisation of the industry, and details working conditions, the training of apprentices, hours of work, wage levels and female labour. This volume also describes the materials used, and discusses the cultivation and preparation of willow, and the use of cane. Volume Two focuses on the craft, and includes sections on the workshop and tools, the basket-making process, types of basket, the market and trade, tradition and progress. Appendices provide a glossary of terms and biographies of the informants. The photographs show views of the area, basket makers at work, willow cultivation and harvesting implements, basket makers' tools, workshops (interior and exterior) and finished articles. The majority were taken by the collector.
