On the Songs of the Rababa

Description

M.A. dissertation on the folk songs of Iraq, with particular reference to three related literary-musical patterns, Attaba, Nile and Swaihly. Chapter One introduces Iraq, the land and its people. The second chapter describes the distribution of the Iraqi song, while the third concentrates on Rababa songs (Attaba, Nile and Swaihly), so-called because they are accompanied by a one-string fiddle of that name. The instrument is of wood, iron and leather construction. Chapter Four describes each of the three patterns in detail, and includes textual examples. A typical singing session is also described. The fifth and final chapter focuses on the content of the songs, and in particular the imagery evoked in the singing.
