Dialectology in London

Description

M.A. dissertation presenting a study of the vowel phonemes in the idiolects of three people from north London ( Stepney, Hoxton and Kilburn), with the purpose of identifying any distinctive local variants. The study is based on continuous, uninhibited conversation collected with the aid of a tape recorder over Christmas 1970. Sections within the study provide information on the localities and informants chosen, an analysis of the collected data and problems of transcription, phonological descriptions of the idiolects for each locality, including extracts from the tape-recorded interviews, transcribed orthographically.
