A Study of the Foundation Legend of Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, and Related Motifs

Description

M.A. dissertation which examines the foundation legend of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh ( 'Chronicon anglo-scoticum') and analogous miraculous stag/deerhunt/church founding legends. The Introduction includes a discussion of hagiography (the science of sacred writing and the composition of Saints' Lives), followed by chapters on deer stories (including the founding of Holyrood Abbey, stag with cross on its head approaches a saint or saints, stag hunts) and other church founding legends. The third and final chapter offers a structural study of the Deer Hunt stories. Latin text and the collector's translations are included in the study.
