Ropemaking Wheel

Description

Wheel used for making rope, Peak Cavern, Castleton (Derbyshire). The wheel is over 300 years old. It is attached to a post fixed into the earth, and consists of three hooks on cog wheels turned by a larger cog. Threads run from the wheel at one end of the rope-walk, to a cart or sledge at the other, depending on the size of the rope. A slip knot goes over one hook; the ropemaker then walks the length of the rope-walk and back, going round each hook in turn. He then turns the wheel to form the rope strands. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B87.
