SED Phonological Map: ME and OE E

Description

Experimental phonological map of the Northern Counties, completed in ms., mapping examples of Middle English and Old English vowel forms found in responses to SED questions V.6.4 Knead, VI.5.5 Speak, VI.5.11 Eat, V.6.1 Meal and VIII.7.5 Steal, and their northern and southern limits. A note at the base of the map states that single deviants are ignored in the isogloss mapping. The map is headed Survey of English Dialects: Northern Counties, and labelled Network of Localities and as a draft. It was compiled by Harold Orton and is dated March 1966.
