Sheep Salving

Description

Mr. M. Horner of Buckden preparing to salve sheep in a field at Cray ( Langstrothdale). A wooden salving bowl, with flat handle, is lodged in a dry stone wall. Salving stool in foreground. Before the introduction of chemical sheep dip, sheep were salved with a mixture of tar and grease, the wool being parted and the salve rubbed into the roots. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B45.
