Sheep Salving

Description

Mr. M. Horner of Buckden salving sheep in a field at Cray ( Langstrothdale). A wooden salving bowl, with flat handle, has been lodged in a dry stone wall. Mr. Horner sits on a salving stool with the sheep, and and prepares to apply the salving mixture. Before the introduction of chemical sheep dip, sheep were salved with a mixture of tar and grease, the wool being parted and the salve rubbed into the roots. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B48.
