Mud Ovens

Description

4 mud plaster ovens set into the wall of a building in Philia (Cyprus). The interior of the ovens are formed from a large storage pot, which is a modern feature. The ovens are heated with a wood fire which is raked out before the item to be baked is inserted. One oven in the slide is shown in use, its opening covered by a damp sack held in place with a stone. The ovens are owned by the local church, and rented out to the whole village for use. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B145.
