Farm Courtyard

Description

Timber buildings around an old farm courtyard at the Norsk Folkemuseum (Norwegian Folk Museum) in Bygdøy, Oslo. The buildings are typical of Setesdal . According to a note in the slide index, the farm layout includes a number of separate buildings, each with its own special function. The oldest dwelling house has an earth floor, central hearth, deep door sill, smoke hole with shutter, great swee, benches around the walls, short medieval beds, and massive timbers. The later dwelling house has a cascaded porch, oven hearth, stabbur (food store), byre, granary, stable, and an oldhus (fire house) where baking and washing were done. The timbers are a rich colour, and feature carvings and decoration. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference A53.
