Pace-Eggers

Description

Copy of a photograph taken in the late-19th century, which purports to be of the Kirkby Stephen Pace-Eggers, or Jolly Boys. They carry musical instruments (tambourine, fiddle, and melodeon), and are dressed in costume as (left-right) Molly Brown-bags, Toss-pot, the Heavy Young Lad(?), Lord Collingwood(?), Lord Nelson and two other unidentified characters. It is not certain that the pace-egging team pictured are actually the Kirkby Stephen Jolly Boys. An ms. note with the photographic print of this image states that a Mrs. Brogden of Kirkby Stephen remembered the team as young lads aged from around 12-14 years old. All but two of the team pictured appear to be adults. However, given the popularity of the custom of pace-egging in the area, the group in the photograph may have come from a neighbouring village.
