Up-Helly-Aa: Firing of the Ship
Description
Torchlight procession and firing of the replica Viking ship at the Up-Helly-Aa festival in Lerwick (Shetland Islands). The procession replaced the custom of pulling blazing tar barrels through the streets. The custom of burning a Norse galley was introduced in 1889 and has since been the main event, replacing the custom of burning Yule fires. Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B137.
