Proposals for the Computerisation of the Survey of English Dialects
Description
This file contains papers relating to Keil's proposals for the computerisation of Survey of English Dialects (SED) data, to provide a concordance and index to all data; to provide a means for the swift and accurate translation of the data into map form; and to establish techniques aimed at completing the analysis of data, which might also be used in similar linguistic research projects. The file includes a typed paper headed Outline of Proposed Computer Application [undated]; a typed paper headed Description of Proposed Research [undated]; photocopies of a Research Grant Budget Summary form from the National Science Foundation, Washington, one of which has been partially completed in ms. by Stewart Sanderson(1967); a copy of a typed draft application to the National Science Foundation outlining the project proposal in detail [undated, ca. ?1967], with Harold Orton's initials in ms.; a photocopied technical diagram showing the SED data computerisation procedure [undated, ca. ?1967]; a typed memorandum following a meeting between Keil, Orton and Sanderson regarding the SED computerisation scheme, signed by Keil (14 January 1969); and a photocopy of Terence D. Crawford and Glyn E. Jones' article, 'Automated Concordancing of Welsh Dialects with Output in the IPA', from 'Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies', vol. XXVII, part 1 (November 1976).
