Leeds Tailoring Industry Papers
Description
Items collected for a project on the Leeds tailoring industry, with related papers. A large proportion of these items are photocopies, and it is unclear when the copies were made. The date range for the creation of the original items is 1914-1992. Items relate to the Leeds tailoring firms Burton's, Hepworth's and John Barran's, with others relating more generally to the tailoring industry as a whole. The first file contains photocopied typed papers supplied by C. H. Hargreaves of Burton's (Leeds): 'The Institute of Production Engineers', 29, [1] leaves, [ca. 1936-1939]; 'A Bird's Eye View of the Largest Tailoring Industry in the World', 28, [1] leaves, [1951?]; 'Talk by Mr. C. H. Hargreaves, Divisional Sales Manager at Guisborough, on Company History and Policy', [3] leaves [undated]; and an untitled paper giving a brief account of the history of Burton's and how Burton's suits are made, [3] leaves, [undated]. The second file contains photocopies of tailoring publications, supplied by C. H. Hargreaves: 'Time Log for Ladies' Garments ... and Terms of Settlement ... for Payment by the Working Hour' (London: Association of London Master Tailors, 1914), viii, 16, [1] p.; 'London Time Log for Hand Work' (London: William Clowes for the Conciliation Board, 1923), xii, 48 p.; 'The Hepworth Style Book' (Spring 1924), 48 p., illustrated; Sir John Foster Fraser, 'Goodwill in Industry: Being the Silver Jubilee Souvenir of Montague Burton' ([London?]: Burtons, 1925), 88 p., illustrated; N. Stephenson and G. Akroyd, 'Textile Technique' (Leeds: Montague Burton Ltd., 1934), 24 p. (copy of Book No. 2001); Sir Montague Burton, 'The Middle Path: Studies in Collective Security' (Leeds: Petty & Sons, 1944), 4th ed., 77, vii p.; David Ryott, 'John Barran's of Leeds, 1851-1951' (Leeds: [Barran's?], 1951), [8], 60 p., illustrated; list of Montague Burton lectures at the University of Leeds, 1942-1954 copied from the published version of the Twelfth Montague Burton Lecture, (1954); Joan Thomas, 'A History of the Leeds Clothing Industry', 'Yorkshire Bulletin of Economic and Social Research: Occasional Paper, no. 1', [1955?], 62 p., illustrated; original (i.e. not photocopied) Hepworth's centenary souvenir (1964); Margaret Stewart and Leslie Hunter, 'The Needle is Threaded: The History of an Industry' ([London?]: Heinemann/Newman Neame, 1964), pp. [1-8], 1, 108-131, 151-153, 162-165, 180-181, 196-201; and Burton's, 'Branch Induction Training Manual for Staff' ([Leeds]: Burton's, [ca. 1980?]), 31 p. The third file contains a series of photocopied press cuttings, mostly extracted from the Burton Group inhouse magazine, 'Contact' (1972-1978, 1980), including details of the customs of dressing up brides, and an Easter bonnet competition. The fourth file contains correspondence relating to sound recordings made by Paul Smith for the Leeds Tailoring Industry Project, undertaken from the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies during the period December 1980-May 1981. The correspondence largely concerns a request for transcriptions of the tapes from Stanley Burton, and consists of correspondence between Burton, Professor I. S. Ewbank (School of English, University of Leeds), Professor Tom Shippey (Head of School), Professor John Barnard (School of English, University of Leeds) and Paul Smith (based by this time at the Department of Folklore, Memorial University of Newfoundland), including a photocopied ms. list of all the sound recordings made (August 1987-October 1991). Burton's correspondence includes evidence of his financial donations to the University. The file also includes correspondence between Dr. Katrina Honeyman (School of History, University of Leeds), Tom Shippey and Paul Smith regarding her access to the tapes and transcriptions (September-October 1992).
