Lincolnshire Wooing Plays: Illustrations and Maps
Description
This file contains 11 ms. illustrations of characters from, and two maps relating to, the Wooing Play in Lincolnshire. The illustrations are mainly in felt-tipped pen, although some are shaded in pencil or water-based paint. The characters depicted are Beelzebub, Besom Betty, Dame Jane, the Doctor (two illustrations), Hobby Hoss, the Indian King, the Lady, Joe Straw, the Tall Hatman and Tom Fool, as found in plough plays at West Halton, Burton Stather, Alkborough and Burringham. All are depicted on A3 sized paper, other than the second illustration of the Doctor which is on a cropped sheet (11.8 x 19.4 cm). All illustrations are labelled, and most include lines quoted from the plays in which the characters appear. The maps show locations in Lincolnshire where Wooing Plays were performed and whether or not they include animal disguise; and villages in Lincolnshire where the Wooing Play was performed, and the routes taken by groups of performers. The items in this file were displayed at a folklore congress at Horncastle College, Lincolnshire, organised by Ethel Rudkin. [Information supplied by Stanley Ellis.]
