Hired Lad and Team
Description
Copy of a photograph dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, of a hired lad with a three-horse team in fields at Thixendale (North Yorkshire). The horses are harnessed to a flat roll. The boy rides the left of the two horses at the back whilst controlling the front horse with reins (or strings), a system unique to the East Riding. The boy wears dress typical of East Riding farm labourers, with corduroy bell-bottoms (often tied at the knee) and a double-breasted waistcoat or small jacket. (Although Thixendale is now situated in North Yorkshire, it lies close to the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding.) Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1687. With ms. note.
