Farmworker and Horse
Description
Copy of a photograph dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, of a farmworker (possibly the farm foreman) with a horse at a farm in Thixendale (North Yorkshire). The horse wears a Scotch collar and is harnessed for a cart, with a cart saddle on its back and britchings around its rear for it to lean into when loading the cart or holding it back when moving downhill. The man wears dress typical of East Riding farm labourers, with corduroy bell-bottoms (often tied at the knee) and a double-breasted waistcoat or small jacket. (Although Thixendale is now situated in North Yorkshire, it lies close to the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding.) Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1693. With ms. note.
