Ijele Masquerade

Description

Card-mounted copy of a photograph taken ca. 1976 of an Ijele dancing at an Ijele Masquerade (Nigerian East Central State). The Ijele costume consists of a frame made of lightweight materials, which is covered and decorated with richly patterned materials, motifs, and figures (human and animal). The wearer is almost completely obscured by the costume, which usually incorporates a small platform on which he can rest while he is not performing. To the right of the photograph are a drummer (with his back to the camera) and a flute player, who provide the music for the Ijele to dance to.
