This file contains linguistic papers by Charles James N. Bailey. These include the typed paper, 'Summary of an Idea Concerning Lexical Exceptions to the Regular Ordering of the Phonological Rules of a Language' (1967), 4 leaves; the typed paper, 'Syllabic, Semisyllabic, and Unsyllabic in English: a Ternary Distinction', preliminary version (21 August 1967), 17 leaves, and a photocopy of the revised version including typed and ms. corrections (February 1968), 17 leaves; a photocopy of the typed paper, 'Generating the Co-ordinate Obstruents in an English Dialect Having Two Kinds of Segmental Length in Addition to Syllabic Length' (revised version, February 1968), 21 leaves; and a photocopy of the typed paper, 'Three Notes' (February 1968), 13 leaves, including notes on a paradox in the mapping of dialectal boundaries (with reference to Southern and Northern United States English), an untested area on lexical exceptions to the regular ordering of phonological rules of a language (marked and unmarked rule orders), and ternary-valued phonetic features. The file also contains photocopies of three undated typed transcriptions of American-English speech collected from a girl from Puerto-Rico, a boy from Kentucky and an African American girl from ?, all apparently recorded in Chicago.. These papers are not specifically marked as Bailey's and do not seem to relate to any of the other papers, but were originally housed in a file with them. File arranged largely chronologically, with undated items last.
