Description
This file comprises an ms. notebook containing a collection of words, phrases and dialect texts of the Black Country (i.e. South Staffordshire, North Worcestershire and North West Warwickshire), compiled by H. J. Starkey, possibly during the course of studies in the Department of English Language and Medieval Literature at the University of Leeds. The collection consists of an alphabetical list of dialect words with definitions; verb forms and grammar; the biblical story of David and Goliath, in dialect; a parody of the 23rd Psalm, in dialect; Black Country sayings; tall tales; children's games; and anecdotes relating to the character Ayli [all in dialect].
