This file contains a copy of Marshall Berger's paper on the importance of meaning of the term accent in linguistics, with reference to André Martinet's functional approach to linguistic analysis. The paper was originally presented at the 13th National Conference on Linguistics in New York, 9 March 1968, and is offprinted from 'Word', volume 24, numbers 1-3 (April-December 1968), pp. 55-61.
