Description

This file contains documentation relating to sound recordings made for the Survey of English Dialects (SED), including informant records; and transcriptions of SED sound recordings. These include Michael Barry and Philip Tilling's transcriptions of SED recordings for - Beckingham, Lincolnshire (10L10) - Markfield, Leicestershire (13Lei5) - Lyonshall, Herefordshire (no locality reference) - Hanbury, Worcestershire (16Wo3) - Tingewick, Buckinghamshire (26Bk1) - Kersey, Suffolk (22Sf5) - Farndon, Cheshire (7Ch4) - Skenfrith, Monmouthshire (23Mon1). The file also includes a typed paper with instructions and methodologies for the transliteration of SED recordings, a report on the transliteration of recordings and a tabular breakdown of times taken to transliterate the recordings listed above, with reference to methodologies used (17 July 1967); miscellaneous ms. notes on the sound recordings in the hands of Martyn Wakelin, Harold Orton and others; photocopied lists of SED localities recording transcriptions kept by Stanley Ellis, the SED recording situation (i.e. disc masters, tapes and unrecorded localities; undated) and copies of SED recordings; a typed and ms. list of localities from Northumberland to Northamptonshire (1Nb - 18Nth) with tabular data on the types of recording available for each locality; Michael Barry's typed list, annotated in ms., of dialect recordings; an ms. list of recordings of Southern Counties informants; a photocopied typed list of recordings not traced or not held in the fieldwork room (at 19 October 1973); a typed paper outlining the SED recording programme situation, signed by Stewart Sanderson, Margaret Jackson and Clive Upton; ms. notes and biographical information on informants recorded in Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Lincolnshire, Shropshire, Leicestershire, Worcestershire, Huntingdonshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, London, Somerset and to an enquiry about informants recorded in Hampshire and Wiltshire (12 February 1964); and typed correspondence between Hannu Pitkannen and Harold Orton on dialect recordings made during fieldwork in Yorkshire (November 1968-February 1969). File arranged as found.
