untitled oil sketch [beheading of John the Baptist]
Description
Undated oil sketch by Edward Petre Novello, which is likely to illustrate a biblical narrative of the beheading of John the Baptist. There are three standing figures in the background, one of which holds a sword in their proper right hand, behind which is Salome holding a platter to receive the head, in front of what is possibly a Roman soldier. On the reverse is a pencil sketch with bearded figures and an inscription in ink in a later hand, which suggests that the study was made in London in around 1835.
